Brother SE1800 Review

Brother SE1800 ReviewSewing Machine Reviews Recommendation Level : HIGH

SE1800 is a straight upgrade from a popular embroidery only machine, the Brother PE770. Both looks very similar from the outside. While PE770 did embroidery only, SE1800 can do both embroidery and regular sewing. The embroidery features of SE1800 is identical to that of PE770. It comes with a 5×7 inch embroidery area. Another 5×12 inch multi-position frame allows you to do larger projects by combining designs with less rehooping.

Brother SE1800 has 136 built-in embroidery designs and 6 embroidery lettering fonts. In addition to the embroidery designs, SE1800 also features 184 built-in sewing stitches and 10 one-step buttonholes. It also comes with a custom stitch feature which allows you to edit already built-in stitches. You can store the customized stitches in the machine memory for later use.

The designs and editing options can be viewed on a 2.7″ x 1.4″ LCD display. It also features an on-screen help option, which means you don’t need to search for the manual all the time. The machine is equipped with an automatic needle threader for easy threading. The automatic thread cutter is a huge blessing as you don’t need a scissor to cut the remaining thread. The programmable needle up/down is handy while pivoting or removing the fabric. The variable speed control and sewing start/stop button lets you sew without the foot pedal.

Changing bobbin on Brother SE1800 is easy as it is equipped with a top drop-in bobbin. Another big plus is the USB connectivity. You can download and import unlimited number of embroidery designs from iBroidery.com or other websites. This gives you infinite opportunities to experiment with different designs. The machine is compatible with Brother embroidery cards as well. On SE1800, you can do embroidery at a maximum speed of 650 stitches/min. 2 LED bulbs illuminate the work space quite well. It comes with a hard cover as well.

Usability

First of all, let me tell you one thing, Brother SE1800 is an easy machine to use. There is little learning curve associated with this machine, even beginners can figure out things quite easily. What I am really impressed with this machine is its stitch quality. The quality of stitches are absolutely high class. The built-in designs have nice variety and if you don’t like them, you can always import designs from the internet. USB file transfer is effortless and works seamlessly (the machine reads PES file format).

Limitations

While using imported designs, you will be better of testing it with some scrap fabrics at first, as some designs may not come out perfect. You can then, correct the settings and proceed. It is not a fault with the machine, it is the way it works.

Sometimes the tension may not be right. The manual clearly says how to adjust it for perfect results.

Pros

  • Sewing and embroidery combo
  • Quality designs and stitches
  • USB connectivity
  • Built-in memory
  • Variety of stitches

Cons

  • Slightly expensive

Is It Worth Buying?

Like its smaller brother PE770, I am impressed with what Brother SE1800 brings to the table. It is a quality sewing and embroidery combo machine. The only issue is that the machine is slightly on the expensive side.
